Standard 5 Element 4. Modeling Best Professional Practices in Service

Faculty members are actively involved in service at all levels. At the College of Education level, all faculty members serve on committees within their respective departments and on the collegiate level. The purpose of these committees includes revising curriculum outcomes to improve instructional content and practices. At the university level, they serve on the Faculty Senate, ASU-AFT, ASU-AEA, and on committees appointed by the president or the vice president for academic affairs.

College of Education faculty are appointed or selected to serve on committees or task forces of the State Department of Education. Examples of these include National Board Certification, textbook selection, special education, and No Child Left Behind. Others serve on committees in their professional organizations and as officers/leaders in these associations at the local, state, and national levels. They are also involved in local schools and community planning for the future of education in Alabama. Faculty also serve as members of accreditation teams for SACS, NCATE, and other accrediting associations and organizations. They serve as readers of proposals for the U.S. Office of Education and as reviewers of textbooks for major publishers.

Proactive involvement of faculty includes collaboration with professional laboratory experiences personnel who make provisions for observations, tutoring/pre-teaching, and internship/student teaching for pre-service candidates. College of Education faculty who supervise interns have direct contact with cooperating teachers and school administrators through conferences when they visit candidates to ascertain their progress and to provide assistance to enhance candidates' learning experiences. Other COE faculty are involved in P-12 school settings by tutoring or working with students individually and in small groups.

Professional education faculty provide leadership by serving as university supervisors. In collaboration with cooperating teachers and principals, faculty and make decisions as participants on committees and educational boards at the local, state, and national levels. Evidence of leadership and service is provided in faculty vitae, which present examples of faculty involvement as consultants, invited speakers at conferences and convocations, facilitators/presenters at workshops, public service participants, and presenters at faculty meetings.
