Standard 5 Element 6. Unit Evaluation of Professional Education
Faculty Performance

The unit's systematic and comprehensive evaluation system includes regular and comprehensive reviews of the professional education faculty's teaching, scholarship, service, collaboration, and leadership by the professional community and leadership in the institution and profession. The College of Education uses the university-wide system of faculty evaluation which focuses on teaching effectiveness, research and creative activity, academic citizenship, and community service.

Faculty performance in these areas is assessed by department chair observations, peer evaluations, candidate evaluations, and documentation of activities of each faculty member. Teaching effectiveness is evaluated using the document, a System of Faculty Evaluation for the Improvement of Faculty Performance . This plan is designed to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of individual faculty members through an annual performance review. At the end of the academic year, the department chair conducts the annual review and presents an appraisal of actual performance as measured against the agreed-upon plan proposed by the faculty member. The annual performance review is central to the tenure and promotion process, which involves evaluation and recommendations by departmental faculty committees. The evaluation and recommendations follow the guidelines established for faculty performance relative to teaching, research and creative activity, academic citizenship, and community service.

Candidates are surveyed annually to evaluate faculty performance using the Student Course Evaluation. The evaluation form was change in Spring 2006 to provide more meaningful data to the faculty (Fall 2004 aggregate evaluation , Fall 2006 aggregate evaluation ). Each faculty member then receives a copy of her/his evaluation based on a 4.0 Likert Scale. Informal evaluations are completed by individual faculty members to ascertain how to improve upon instructional performance . Data from the Student Course Evaluation are available for review in the exhibit room.
